The Base Value of Triple Axel has been Changed! From 7.5, it will get a base value of 8.3 now!

3a before = 7.5 base value
3a NOW = 8.3 base value

0.8 is a big p0int already! Based on what we saw on last two World Champs (2007 Tokyo and 2008 Goteborg) the points between first (gold) and second (silver) is "less than a point" or just "a p0int or two"

Thank God ISU decided to do that. One of the best ISU ruling change ever made!

Mao Asada - Still Under Arutunian?!

Okay... here is it... I've been reading a lot of things about Mao's coaching change so I can see who is the one more likely to be her coach. Then I read some news articles and found out that Mao want "Tatiana Tarasova", who choreographed her shot programme this o7-o8 season. But then Tarasova said something like "no" because she has to take care of her mother. So it is till not clear if Tarasova will.

Anyway I got a little surprised when I read this article about Mao Asada that she has not really separated with Rafael Arutunian and stuff. And according to what I see (some kinda little research), I think this news was released (02-28-08) and published after the day (02-27-08) of those who have announced the Mao separated with her coach.

Contradicting a report from Kyodo News early Wednesday morning, the agent for figure skating star Mao Asada said she has not split with her Armenian coach, Rafael Arutunian, or decided to move her training base back to Japan.

"This story is completely untrue," said IMG's Mariko Wada, the representative for Mao and older sister Mai, by telephone on Wednesday evening. "There has been no discussion with Rafael about ending the relationship with Mao."

The 17-year-old Asada, the runnerup at last year's world championships to compatriot Miki Ando, and older sister Mai have been working with Arutunian for the past 18 months in Lake Arrowhead, Calif.

Eyebrows were raised when Arutunian did not coach Mao at the Four Continents Championship in South Korea earlier this month. Mao won the competition and, with rival Kim Yu Na withdrawing due to an injury, is the favorite to win the world title next month in Sweden.

Arutunian, who also coaches several other skaters, had originally planned to come to Japan to work with Mao and then accompany her to the Four Continents.

"All of the arrangements had been made for his visas and travel," said Wada. "He said he could stay for 10 days. He was going to come to Nagoya for four days and then go to South Korea."

Wada says it was around this time that Arutunian changed his plans.

"One week before the event, he told me he had not seen Mao train for quite a while and was wondering about her condition," she said. "He said he could not be responsible for her, so she worked by herself and the Japan Skating Federation stepped in and supported her."

Mao, a Nagoya native, now has the convenience of being able to practice at the new national training center at nearby Chukyo University when she is in Japan.

"Mao can train at Chukyo and the JSF people can look after her. She has decided to stay in Nagoya until the worlds."

Wada said Arutunian, who once mentored Michelle Kwan, will not coach Mao at the worlds.

"We never had any type of long-term agreement with Rafael in the first place," she noted. "But we have not decided to stop working with him."

Wada was especially disturbed by the Kyodo story, which cited anonymous sources as claiming that Mao "had been suffering stress because of the language barrier and other problems she has encountered living overseas."

"This is totally wrong," Wada said. "To the contrary, Mao likes training in California. She can relax and have privacy that she does not in Japan."

The 2008 World Championships was a very great competition. We saw many things happen. We saw Mao's great comeback at the freeskate, Yu-Na Kim's injury hold-backs her performances, Ando's backout, Nakano being underrated on the marks and Kostner being overrated.

An Ultimate Solution for Japanese Skating Rinks Problem!

TOKYO (Reuters Life!) - No ice, no problem -- Japanese skaters will soon be able to lace up anywhere and at any temperature at rinks made from petrochemical panels.

Ice skating has become increasingly popular in Japan with the success of star figure skaters such as Olympic gold medalist Shizuka Arakawa, but rinks across the country have been closing down due to financial difficulties.

The resin rinks save up to $190,000 a year in air conditioning and water bills and they're better for the environment, the distributors say.

"More young Japanese are trying to find a spot for ice skating lessons. But there aren't enough rinks," said Hideo Iwano of distributor Mitsubishi Plastics.

"We hope to provide more skating opportunities for those young skaters, raising the overall number of skaters in Japan."

Originally manufactured by a Spanish company, the two-by-one meter (six-by-three feet) panels will be available in Japan in June.

"This rink needs some adjustment for professional use, but is definitely good enough for amateurs," skater Shinsuke Tanaka told Reuters at a demonstration in Yokohama. "You don't have to worry about getting soaked as well."
